Description:

As we are getting closer to Persian New Year and Chaharshanbe Suri festival, ISTA is going to screen Fireworks Wednesday (Chaharshanbe Suri) movie by academy award-winning director, Asghar Farhadi. Join us for the screening of this breathtaking film on Sunday, March 10th 2013.

About the movie:
All of Tehran is preparing to celebrate Chaharshanbe Suri, or the festival of fire, which falls on the last Tuesday night before the Persian New Year. On this auspicious evening, Rouhi (Taraneh Alidoosti), a young woman from a poor neighborhood, is hired by a middle class couple to clean their house. Sweet, naive, and soon to be married, Rouhi’s innocence is shattered when she finds herself in the middle of her employers’ domestic dispute over accusations of infidelity. “Few Iranian films have tried to realistically depict both the urban middle and lower classes, and fewer still with the complexity of story telling and depth of characterization in Asghar Farhadi’s impressive third feature, Fireworks Wednesday” (Deborah Young, Variety). Winner of the Gold Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival.

Come join us for a great night of Persian recitation of Shahnameh by Gordafarid on Sunday February 24th. Gordafarid will recite and perform hand-picked epic poems and love stories of Shahnameh.

Fatemeh Habibizad (a.k.a Gordafarid) The first female naqqal (storyteller) of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, Gordafarid, has excelled in performing traditional narration of epic stories (naqqali) through thirteen years of research, meticulous collection of narratives, and patiently following the footsteps of old masters of this ancient dramatic art. Gordafarid has come a long way in challenging conventional social norms that consider naqqali as being an art form performed by men and for men in public places such as coffeehouses. Her perseverance and determination bore fruit when Morshed Torabi, the most famous naqqal in Iran, prized her with his own cane in recognition of her achievements. She has incorporated different styles of naqqali into a seamless and unique narrative style that is all her own. Gordafarid’s stunning capability in capturing the imagination of audience has drawn large crowds to her numerous performances both inside Iran and abroad.

AIAP & ISTA: Houshang Ebtehaj (Sayeh) at UC San Diego

Description:

Iranian STudent Association (ISTA) in collaboration with Association of Iranian American Professionals of San Diego (AIAP) is honored to host Hushang Ebtehaj (with the pen name of H. E. Sayeh) at UC San Diego for a talk on Iran's contemporary poem followed by Q&A. The language will be Farsi throughout the event.

Event Information:

Where: UCSD Center Hall

When: December 2 2012, 2 - 4 pm

Admission: FREE ($10 to reserve your seat; refunded by showing up at the event)

About Sayeh:

Having dedicated himself to his art for six decades, Sayeh (Amir Houshang Ebtehaj) has shown great perseverance in writing unfettered poems. A renowned poet of conscience, he has been an inspirational and unstoppable force for his country and its people in the age of totalitarian governments exercising brutal and vicious political, social and religious control over Iranian citizens. His deceptively simple poems - loaded with sublime allegories, penetrating ironies, visual images, sober elegies, literary allusions and masterly juxtapositions - evoke powerful mental pictures. The wide spectrum of his poetic work ranges from classic rhymed lyrics (ghazals) to modern blank verse delving into the Iranian psyche.
